Characteristics of Aluminum Paste Production Line

Compared with general pigment or powder production lines, aluminum silver paste production lines have significant differences in safety levels, process logic, and product form. Understanding these ‘characteristics’ is the first step in making investment decisions, workshop design, or personnel training.
1、 One of the pigment production lines with the highest safety level
Aluminum powder will release hydrogen gas when wet, and solvent vapor mixed with air can form explosive gases. Therefore, the entire line is designed according to Class A fire hazard: from the ball mill, classifier to the slurry mixing kettle, all equipment is nitrogen inert throughout the process, and oxygen content is interlocked online; All electrical components are explosion-proof (Ex d/Ⅱ C), and equipment and pipelines are reliably grounded to prevent static electricity; The factory building needs to be equipped with an independent explosion venting surface and maintain a safe distance from surrounding facilities as required by regulations. The investment in safety and environmental protection often accounts for 30% -40% of the total project investment, which is a hard cost that ordinary color powder production lines do not have.
2、 The core is not ‘crushing’, but ‘fragmentation’
Conventional powders aim to finely grind particles, while aluminum silver paste aims to grind spherical aluminum powder into thin flakes. The evaluation index is not fineness, but diameter to thickness ratio – the ratio of aluminum sheet diameter to thickness. The ball milling grading, type of additives, and grinding time jointly determine the diameter to thickness ratio, which in turn determines the final metallic luster, covering power, and angular discoloration effect. This means that the “feel” and process accumulation of the production line are more important than simply selecting equipment, and it is also a technological watershed for domestic and foreign manufacturers.
3、 Wet closed loop, solvent circulation
The entire line operates in a solvent oil system: the solvent used for ball milling, the solvent removed by pressure filtration, and the solvent added for slurry adjustment are closed-loop recycled through a condensation recovery system. VOCs tail gas is discharged after being treated with RTO or activated carbon adsorption. Compared with dry crushing, wet crushing system has less dust and is safer, but it also brings continuous operating costs such as solvent loss, explosion prevention, and recycling treatment.
4、 Products are determined by ‘formulas’ rather than’ equipment ‘
The same set of ball milling grading pressure filtration equipment, by adjusting the additives and coating formula, can produce dozens of grades such as floating type, non floating type, fine-grained automotive topcoat type, coarse-grained anti-corrosion type, etc. Equipment is the platform, formula is the product. This also determines that aluminum silver paste factories usually adopt a production organization mode of “multiple varieties, small batches, and frequent batch switching”, which requires high requirements for workshop scheduling, cleaning and production replacement, and quality traceability.
5、 Batch stability is the biggest challenge
Aluminum sheets are easily affected by temperature, nitrogen purity, and fluctuations in the batch of raw aluminum powder during the grinding process, resulting in a situation of “same formula, different luster”. Therefore, each mature production line will be equipped with online particle size monitoring, process sampling, and rapid color difference detection to shorten the batch adjustment cycle. New factories often require a process ramp up period of 6-12 months to consistently produce qualified products.
6、 The product is a “semi-finished product” with strong downstream adaptability
The aluminum silver paste leaving the factory is a paste containing about 35% solvent, not a final product. Customers need to use secondary dispersion in coatings, inks, or plastic formulations. Therefore, when designing the production line, it is necessary to consider the adjustable range of customer viscosity, aluminum content, and particle size distribution, reserve mixing kettles and formula development stations, rather than just focusing on one “standard product”.
